No-drill cable organizers: rule out an attachment before buying

Direction 1: Leave the attachment surface untouched

Choose this if: Preserving an unmarked finish is a firm requirement and an attachment's removal warning conflicts with it.

Tradeoff: Deferring attachment leaves the cable-organizing problem to solve through your existing arrangement.

Check first: Write down whether your requirement is simply no drilled holes or also no removal marks. Evaluate the exact product against that requirement.

Example: IKEA warns that removing KALKSTUFF white 305.730.21 can leave tape marks and damage delicate surfaces. Exclude it for a strict unmarked-finish requirement. This does not mean every use causes damage.

Direction 2: Screen a clamp against the desk edge

Direction 3: Defer until the missing check is answered

Choose this if: You have no documented conflict yet, but cannot establish compatibility with the proposed location and contents.

Tradeoff: Waiting postpones the change while giving you a specific question to resolve.

Check first: List unanswered questions about the edge profile, underside obstructions, contact area, usable space around plugs and access. Seek exact-product documentation before treating these as resolved.

Example: Your note says 'edge thickness recorded; underside clearance unknown'. Keep the choice unresolved. A thickness check alone is not installation approval, and rejecting an adhesive option does not approve a clamp.

Complete one decision record per option

Start with the task: cable problem to solve ____; desk area to reclaim ____; work area to preserve ____. If your existing arrangement already meets the task, keep it.

Record your constraints: drilled holes acceptable? ____; removal marks acceptable? ____; proposed attachment location ____; measurements and units ____.

Record the evidence: exact product and variant ____; manufacturer source ____; date checked ____; relevant warning or dimensional limit ____.

Assign a result: 'Reject for this situation' when a documented limit conflicts with a firm requirement. Write the conflict explicitly. Use 'Unresolved' when a required measurement or compatibility answer is missing.

Write the next action: keep the existing arrangement, abandon this candidate for this location, or obtain the named missing evidence. Do not turn a blank answer into a pass.

Finish with one sentence: 'This option is ____ because ____; I would reconsider only if ____.' Keep separate records for alternatives so that one rejection cannot silently become another option's approval.

Worked exclusion and assumptions

The clamp example assumes a 2-inch thickness at the proposed attachment location. This is an invented scenario, not a typical desk measurement.

Original calculation: 2 - 1 5/8 = 3/8 inch above the listed maximum. The result rejects this thickness combination; it supplies no evidence about other locations or products.

The finish example assumes that accepting possible removal marks is incompatible with the reader's requirement. Its result follows from that requirement and the manufacturer's warning, not a prediction of damage on a particular desk.
