What should you measure before buying a desk organizer?
A compact-desk worksheet for checking usable space, product dimensions, access clearance, and unresolved fit questions before purchasing.

Start with the space you want to keep clear
For a compact apartment desk, begin by marking out your keyboard, mouse, and writing areas with loose paper. Then measure a proposed organizer location: clear width, clear depth, and height to the nearest obstruction. Treat this as a planning exercise, and preserve the work areas you actually use.
Check three things separately: whether the organizer fits in that location, whether your belongings fit inside it, and whether you can retrieve them there. Record unanswered questions before choosing a product.
Use product measurements, not shipping dimensions
IKEA lists the white RISATORP desk organizer, article 205.404.94, as 19 3/4 inches wide, 6 1/4 inches deep, and 6 3/4 inches high. Its packaging dimensions are listed separately. Use the product measurements for your layout.
For each candidate, copy the exact model, variant, and dimension labels. Mark compartment dimensions as unknown unless the manufacturer supplies them or you have reliable measurements. Do not substitute an exterior measurement for an interior one.

A worked width-and-depth check
For this worksheet, required width equals product width plus your left and right allowances. Required depth equals product depth plus your front and rear allowances. These are rectangular layout calculations, not manufacturer clearance requirements.
Suppose your available rectangle measures 22 by 8 inches. Using the RISATORP dimensions above, assume a combined allowance of 1 inch across the sides and 1 inch across the front and rear. The planned rectangle becomes 20 3/4 by 7 1/4 inches, leaving 1 1/4 inches in width and 3/4 inch in depth. These are calculated margins from hypothetical inputs.
Passing this calculation answers only the horizontal layout question. Complete the height, storage, and access fields before treating the candidate as suitable.
Use the worksheet to decide your next step
If a required dimension exceeds the space you reserved, try a smaller candidate or a different location. If a critical measurement is missing, keep that candidate undecided. If the dimensions work, use the paper layout while doing an ordinary desk task before buying.
