Will two organizers fit a shallow desk drawer and leave a useful storage strip?

Check closure before arranging the drawer

For a compact desk, screen drawer height first, then compare the uninterrupted space left beside your organizers. A layout that holds both trays may still leave the wrong shape for the belongings you want to move off the desktop.

Record the smallest vertical clearance above the drawer floor along the intended organizer position throughout closing. Include any obstruction above that path. If you cannot establish this clearance, leave the fit decision unresolved.

For this worksheet, height margin equals clear height minus liner thickness, loaded organizer height and your chosen spare clearance. Measure loaded height from the organizer base to the highest stored item or tray edge, whichever is higher. A negative margin rejects the proposed arrangement; a positive result still needs a careful physical check without forcing the drawer.

Two documented tray inputs

IKEA lists beige NOJIG 504.681.04 as 6 inches wide, 7 3/4 inches deep and 2 inches high. Beige NOJIG 704.574.87 is 4 inches wide, 7 3/4 inches deep and 2 inches high.

Use these product dimensions as exterior planning rectangles. They do not establish usable interior storage dimensions.

Original height example: assume 2 1/4 inches of closing clearance, no liner, contents below the 2-inch rim and a chosen 1/8-inch spare clearance. The margin is 2 1/4 - 0 - 2 - 1/8 = 1/8 inch. At 1 3/4 inches of closing clearance, the same calculation gives -3/8 inch and fails. The spare clearance is an example, not an IKEA requirement.

Compare the same trays in two arrangements

Assume an unobstructed drawer interior 12 inches wide and 17 inches front to back. Reserve 1/4 inch at each wall and a 1/4-inch gap between trays. The rectangle inside the wall allowances is 11 1/2 by 16 1/2 inches. All drawer measurements and allowances here are hypothetical.

Side by side, with both tray fronts aligned: combined width is 6 + 1/4 + 4 = 10 1/4 inches; depth is 7 3/4 inches. Placed against the left allowance, this group leaves a continuous right-side strip 1 1/4 inches wide and 16 1/2 inches deep.

Front to back, with the trays' left edges aligned: group width is 6 inches; depth is 7 3/4 + 1/4 + 7 3/4 = 15 3/4 inches. The continuous right-side strip becomes 5 1/2 by 16 1/2 inches.

Both groups fit the assumed horizontal rectangle. For an assumed long-item target of 5 by 16 inches, the side-by-side arrangement fails the strip-width test; the front-to-back arrangement passes. This compares the right-side strip only, not every possible use of the remaining space.

Rehearse with loose paper footprints and your existing belongings. Check whether you can reach the rear tray at the drawer's normal opening, retrieve contents and keep the planned strip clear. Record unresolved access or interior-fit questions before buying.
